Cash for Kids supporters took on on two incredible Big Hike challenges in May, raising more than £19,000 to help local children and young people who need our support.

The events took place at Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland and Kinder Scout in the Derbyshire Peak District, bringing walkers, local businesses and volunteers together for some unforgettable days in the great outdoors.

Taking on Hadrian’s Wall

On the 8th May, a group of 20 walkers completed a 20km hike along Hadrian’s Wall.

The challenge supported Cash for Kids North East England and Cash for Kids Cumbria. It tested the trekkers from start to finish, with steep climbs, stunning views and some of the most famous scenery in Northumberland.

Starting at Walltown Country Park, the route passed through valleys and fells, past Housesteads Roman Fort, Sycamore Gap, Crawfields Quarry, Steel Rigg and Crag Lough. They also enjoyed long stretches of Hadrian’s Wall itself – reaching it’s highest point at 1,000ft – and completed the challenge in under eight hours.

Every finisher received a medal and t-shirt, kindly provided by sponsor Lloyd Motor Group who also took part. Other local businesses who joined the challenge included Sealy Beds, Arco, PPM Ltd, Splendid Restaurants, Rowen Group, New College Durham, The Chocolate Smiths and Bestford Insurance.

Jo Harker Bestford from Bestford Insurance said: “What a day. It was a lot tougher than I thought it would be but we all made it to the end! The scenery was stunning and it was great to get out in the fresh air to raise funds for Cash for Kids. We can’t wait for next year.”

Sunshine at Kinder Scout

A couple of weeks later on 22nd May, it was time for the first Big Hike at Kinder Scout, the highest point in the Peak District.

The event supported Cash for Kids North and West Yorkshire, Cash for Kids East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire and Cash for Kids South Yorkshire and Derbyshire.

Walkers enjoyed beautiful sunshine and incredible views. A huge thank you goes to everyone who took part, including Donna, Fraser, Leanne, Stephen and Rachel, plus Local Executive Board member for Cash for Kids East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire Alex Divers.

Both hikes were led by specialist provider Challenge Northumberland, with support from volunteer guides. In total, over £19,000 was raised to support children and young people across these local communities.
